JH Food Group

Sunday, June 25th will be the last food group at El Globo – where I hope to get a show of how they produce their tortillas in house (Nixtamal isn’t the only one). Meet at 12:45pm, no RSVP required.

El Globo Restaurante
42-13 102 Street, Corona NY 11368

Reservations are not required, but if you plan on coming, send along a message so I can get a good headcount.

In related news… We are getting serious about food: I’m officially announcing The Ambassador Program. Whereas the Jackson Heights Food Group is about the neighborhood, the Ambassador Program is about the food. This new adventure may take place anywhere in the city limits and occur at anytime – whatever it takes. Here, our group will have a guide to order for the table and discuss what we are eating and why we are eating it. This allows us diners to let go, eat well, and expand our boundaries for the city, the world and our palates. Selfishly, there are a lot of cultures I don’t know about, and this seems like an efficient way to learn more and have a good time. I can’t think of a better way of doing this.

I am looking for Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, you will have complete control over a magnificent feast of your expertise, all paid for by the group of attendees. If this sounds like your idea of fun, fill out the form on the Ambassador’s page and send it to me. And if you would like to be a part of the Ambassadors Program, send me your email address and I will put you on the list.

The Jackson Heights Food Group meets every month at sometimes adventurous, always authentic places to eat centered in, but not limited to, Jackson Heights, Queens. People come to experience new foods, new areas of the neighborhood and to meet people with similar interests. Every choice is within walking distance of the Roosevelt Ave/Jackson Heights subway stop.

“One of the many benefits of meeting the nice people… of the Jackson Heights Food Group is that if I put up a post on Facebook on a Thursday afternoon to see if anyone feels like dinner in Queens that night, someone is bound to answer, since they live here too. It’s great.”From Under the 7 Blog

In previous sessions, we’ve met at Shangri-La Express, Friends Korean Restaurant, Himalayan Yak and Spicy Mina in Woodside, The super secret Bengali restaurant: Chili’s Grand Restaurant, Legends Bar / Texas Ranger BBQ, U Dzika, Casa Colombia, El Anzuelo Fino, Delhi Heights and Grande Estrella in JH, Louie’s Pizzeria, Tortilleria Nixtamal and Timmy O’s Frozen Custard in Corona, Meson Asturias, Hornado Ecuatoriano (2x), Fiesta Mexicana, New Broadway Seafood, Ayada, and Chao Thai in Elmhurst, and Plaka, Cannelle Patisserie, and Cassidy’s Ale House in East Elmhurst.

  9. My friend Fanny will come with me to the Tortilleria. Can’t wait — and thanks again for organizing this! Jennie

  10. I still cannot seem to log onto Jackson Heights Life forum.

Sometimes I am able to navigate it, but most other times it prevents me from viewing the page. I’ve been on different computers and it does the same thing.

I’ve sent the link to several others and they report the same problem as well.

Anyways my vote goes to Ayada, unless you guys are planning to meet at Jackson Diner for the lunch buffet. Dinners become expensive in any Indian restaurants, so I always stick with the buffets.

To be honest I’m fine with either restaurants as long as it isn’t Donovan’s. I’ve been to Donovan’s before back when I used to live in Woodside.

There was nothing impressive about their burgers and neither was the Irish soda bread. I highly Un-recommend Donovan’s.

  11. Both the burgers at Donovan’s and the unusual Thai at Ayada sound fantastic, and both sound like they’d be extrafun with a group — so I am torn. Either! Both! Yay! Count me in either way. (Hope we can do this before Aug 22, when I leave town for a week. If not, I’ll catch you all in September.)

  12. Hey, have you guys set the date for the JHFG event yet? Ayada sounds awesome !

  13. I’d like to go to Ayada or an Indian place. Have you picked a date yet?

  14. Ayada is awesome. You have to bring your own beer or wine.
When is it? I would love to join the group.

  15. Please add my address to your email list. This sound like a great group.

  16. Please add my address to your email list. This sounds great.

  17. Hi Jeff,

What a great site! Can I be added to the ML list? Hoping to join the dinner this month!

    Best,

    Stacy

  18. Do you have room for one more? I moved to Queens a few years ago from Manhattan and my husband is NOT an adventorous eater, so I explore the restaurants by myself. I am a professional cook and have a blog about vegetarian menus and wine pairing:
    http://grapesandgreens.blogspot.com/

I love the concept of your group and would be very interested in joining you.

    Thanks!!

  19. Jeff, glad to know that JHFG is off the ground. About 12 years ago a friend of mine started something similar for folks in Flushing and Jackson Hts. It kinda fizzled- needs energy to maintain.

Please add me to your list and I’d like to join the Oct 18 choice assuming its in the evening. I need to learn more about new places in JH but can be a leader in Flushing. (I do strongly recommend Delhi Heights!)

I lead walking tours, particularly in ethnic Queens.

    Jack

  40. I’ve just joined this blog with the intention of joining the group’s eating runs. My husband and I love living in Jackson Heights and will enjoy the adventurous outings you plan. Have you seen this video made by high school students in Flushing? Steam Buns R Us.
