don't know who muskie is or FQF but yeah that's cool. What I don't have much of on the map are the proper restaurants -- there are a lot of them that seem really good.

As a native SI'er who now lives in NJ (via Miami and Delaware), I think I may have to visit a few of these places!!

“we don’t charge tax – we collect it” - I think they mean they collect the tax from you, then give it to the state. Most people (esp long ago) might think when you pay tax, you are giving it to the proprietors, and they benefit - so maybe they were getting lots of complaints about the high tax, and felt they wanted to defend themselves.

Thanks for the writeup. I grew up on 182nd st, BEFORE Brother's existed. We used to go to Villa Secundo, which did large takeout pies for $3 (probably about $10-12 in today's dollars).

Nothing beats NY pizza; look forward to going to Brother's again next time I'm in Queens.

I'd just like to point out that as a resident of nearby Jackson Heights this type of police harassment is what these street vendors deal with every day. I'd bet any amount of money the ticket was for nothing. I moved to this neighborhood precisely because of the cultural mix and street food and I sometimes see the cops treating these people as if they're a nuisance...meanwhile they have a line everyday to buy the food they sell, so clearly they're not. Either myself or my girlfriend buys tamales from the nice tamale lady at 82nd and Roosevelt virtually every morning...they're delicious. Probably the root of this story is "25 year old police officers". As a prospective NYPD recruit at the ripe old age of 32...if hired I will NEVER behave in this manner. I'll never understand when cops do this because most of them have become cops for one of 2 reasons...#1.to genuinely help people, but mostly #2. to get a paycheck for doing as little work as humanly possible. Harassing nice ladies selling tamales doesn't hash with either of these. I also love their quote "there have been muggings in the area".....great observation officer Farva, why not try and keep those from happening instead of ticketing a tamale lady for no good reason.

It's not exactly my town. My family settled there after coming over from Italy, but I've never actually lived in Old Forge, though my parents are both from there. In fact, my grandfather was once mayor! (I'm in the Washington, D.C., area.) I think the pizza capital claim comes not only from the distinctive pizza there, but also from having an extraordinarily high number of pizzarias per capita, many times higher than in, say, NYC.

Thanks for the comment, Cathy!
I agree, it's totally a local's pizza. I guess I was commenting just on the fact that they call it the "Pizza capital of the world" - which I guess is why I came. Very interesting about the cheese blends. I totally respect your town!

i tasted this food every month and it's amazing! i'm Korean so i know what is good and bad. I'm telling you, with this price, the value is way above the price. and the amount of food is more than sufficient amount.
It's not too spicy but juicy and the sauce is incredible. I wonder how the cook makes the sauce. With the sauce, any type of food would taste good.

Old Forge pizza is not just for tourists. It's not even primarily for tourists. Surely you don't think a town the size of Old Forge gets enough tourists to keep so many pizzerias in business? My family is from Old Forge. My grandmother lived there her entire life, a few blocks away from Ghigiarelli's and Revello's. The locals do frequent these places. Usually, everyone you see there lives nearby. Also, there is no single kind of cheese that is common to Old Forge pizza. Each restaurant has its own blend, and those blends are closely guarded secrets. Old Forge pizza connoisseurs can distinguish one restaurant's pizza from another's by the taste of the cheese alone. (Well, sometimes by the presence or lack of onions in the sauce, as well.)

Hi Jeff - I wouldn't normally do this, but I feel this is extremely important, so please forgive me for interrupting/cutting into your blog with this urgent request and plea.

If there are any cat lovers reading this, who live in the NYC/tri-state area, or if you know anyone who loves cats and can take a sweet, beautiful, 3 month old kitten, please go over to the Design Sponge blog (it's a crafts blog) and leave a message or e-mail Grace at her blog: designsponge@gmail.com. daily basis.

If I still lived in New York, i would take in this kitten in half a heartbeat. As I now live in Ireland, there's unfortunately no way that I can help in any other way than to put the message and urgent plea for anyone who reads this who might be able to help. Grace found this kitten near her home and at the moment is looking after her while she's seeking someone who can give this little bundle of love and affection a forever home. Although the kitten has been since taken to the vets and has been diagnosed with FIV positive, please know that FIV is a very commonly misunderstood disease- cats that test positive can live happy, healthy lives for years and years and cannot transmit the disease to humans or other species of animals.

Once again, my humble and sincere apologies to you, Jeff, for using your blog space to put this message out there to your readers/fans and followers. I don't do the Facebook or Twitter thing, so blogs and e-mails are the only way I can forward this message to a lot of people at the same time.

Hi Jeff – I wouldn’t normally do this, but I feel this is extremely important, so please forgive me for interrupting/cutting into your blog with this urgent request and plea.

If there are any cat lovers reading this, who live in the NYC/tri-state area, or if you know anyone who loves cats and can take a sweet, beautiful, 3 month old kitten, please go over to the Design Sponge blog (it’s a crafts blog) and leave a message or e-mail Grace at her blog: designsponge@gmail.com. daily basis.

If I still lived in New York, i would take in this kitten in half a heartbeat. As I now live in Ireland, there’s unfortunately no way that I can help in any other way than to put the message and urgent plea for anyone who reads this who might be able to help. Grace found this kitten near her home and at the moment is looking after her while she’s seeking someone who can give this little bundle of love and affection a forever home.

I don’t do the Facebook or Twitter thing, so blogs and e-mails are the only way I can forward this message to a lot of people at the same time. Please check out Grace’s blog and her post about this sweet kitten in need of help, at designsponge@gmail.com

Thanks so very much to any kind soul reading this who may be able to help.

Thanks for sharing these brilliant, wonderful photos of what definitely had to have been one of the best events ever held in Queens (or anywhere in the NY/5 boroughs/LI area, full stop!). Kasha varnishkes is one of my all-time favourite comfort foods in the entire universe - I would've loved to try the variation on the theme, as it sounds (and looks) amazingly, incredibly delicious! As does everything you've taken photos of. It's at times like this when I truly do miss living in New York. I wish I could've just hopped on a plane and joined all of you there. Every one of those photos has that friendly, fun vibe. Everyone's so happy...and not just because of the amazing food (although that's of course a huge part of it), but just the whole 'community spirit' thing, and the foodie thing, and the Queens/NY thing.

I'm so happy for everyone who took part in what I hope will become a regular event. It was definitely a success from what I can see here. Well done to both of you for coming up with the fantastic idea in the first place, and also for organising it and making it the brilliant experience it was - I don't have to have been there (although I wish I was!) to know that.

Seeing these photos really made me smile - all those happy, smiling faces! You are way cool, Jeff. Thanks again for sharing. - June
