This deserves a special mention:
Rosario’s in Astoria (2255 31st St) is a full-scale Italian deli, with lots of European styles and goods, cheeses, breads and salads. They can make you a hero and you can get an 8 oz coffee soda, but you can also get one of the best slices of pizza in Queens.
This round pie curiously has mozzarella you would find on more artisanal (expensive) pies and the red sauce seems like it should be mixed with pasta, not atop a pie. The crust is crunchy and somehow works, but the toppers are what takes it. I surmise they take their ingredients straight from their own shelves. I strongly suggest you get your pizza loving soul onto 31st street precipitately.

I think my papu (grandfather) took me to this combination deli/Italian grocer/pizzeria when I was a kid, when we still lived in Astoria. If it’s the same place I’m thinking of, and if the store front hasn’t changed much from what I remember, then yes, the pizza there was quite delicious. There was also one on Ditmars Blvd. that we used to go to every Sunday afternoon, but then, there are lots of pizzerias on Ditmars, so I can’t be sure/can’t remember exactly which one it was, but I loved the pizza there too…and I loved Astoria (we lived on 21st Street)

Rosario’s is awesome. Has been my fave pizza in Astoria since he opened. My dad came to visit for the first time in five years and said, “I don’t really need to do anything special. But I do want to eat some of that pizza.”
FYI, the random old guy who sits around the perch-and-eat area and (in my case) passes you napkins and stuff is allegedly Rosario’s dad.

That pie looks like cheese heaven. So glad you’re putting this to my attention. Always love how to hunt down the most interesting foods. Thanks Jeffrey!

[...] I’ve done pizza explorations without a camera before. And afterwards I’ve always been filled with regret and incompleteness. To me, it is of utmost importance to document these pizzas. When I looked online for photos of the unique slice from Rosario’s Deli, I was astonished that there were none. All of these experiences I’ve heard of wonderment, and no one has ever snapped a picture? The first time I went, I had no camera and it was more remarkable than I imagined, but eating seemed like a waste of time if I could not document it. Rosario’s was tearing at me to take a picture of their slice, so a month later I went back and did it proper. [...]
