Shoutout: Zabinah – Explore the Alternatives

One of my favorite tricks to finding authentic places to eat is looking at *strange resources.” What I mean by this is not mainstream culture websites. Sometimes they don’t even know they are giving tips to finding good eats.

Zabinah means to adhere to Islamic dietary laws. This website was created to help Muslims find places to eat by letting users add reviews. At post time, there are 290 restaurants listed in the New York, NY area and over 34,000 across the States.

I am especially happy to find this because it is all in English. It’s interesting to see what’s popular, for instance: Kebab Cafe has zero reviews (62 reviews on yelp), while it’s Steinway neighbor El-Rawsheh has 11 reviews (5 on yelp).

Eater beware: the restaurants may be closed because the site has been around for 10+ years and is not highly policed.

You should never eat a bad or at least an unproductive meal. So remember…
Do your research, be daring, and spread the word!

  1. Zabihah is such an excellent and resourceful guide to finding halal restaurant and products. I am definitely a fan of it! I’m sure there are times where it can be frustrating to want to eat certain foods that is not halal and luckily Zabihah can help.

El-Rawsheh looks delicious. I have never had Lebanese cuisine, and that will definitely be on my list!
