Village Voice Choice Eats 2010
Monday March 22, 2010
6:30 – 9:30pm
The 69th Armory at Lex
68 Lexington Ave, NYC
Every year it’s great. As for my regular job, I somehow manage to get a flu whenever this date rolls around. This year, they’ve raised the price to $45. Which seems to be a tipping point going from worth it for the food to worth it for the experience.
It still remains, to me, the only food event worth paying the entrance fee. The crowds started to get crazy last year, and possibly this year will be even worse. If you are a phobe, there is a VIP hour ($75, sold out) where you get to eat before the middle-class get their dibs. Add in plenty of alcohol and it’s plainly a great time from two of the most respected food explorers in the ripest food jungle in the nation, Sarah DiGregorio and Robert Sietsema.
With over 50 restaurants participating, how am I supposed to try them all? At the very least, I will eat the shortest lines with interesting offerings/sweetest offerers, but I will aim for a few in particular. It’s best to get to the most popular ones early and leave the South African offerings to the end, as they usually look sad towards the tail of the night when no one wants to use stomach real estate on them. So what am I looking forward to?
Radegast Hall & Biergarten
Mustang Thakali Kitchen (local hero, haven’t been there yet)
Luke’s Lobster (this will be mobbed)
Fette Sau (also mobbed)
Egg (probably mobbed)
Some of these I’ve tried before, but I’m especially interested to see what they offer because I dig them so much (Motorino, Radegast). Should be good.
